Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. She was a headgirl in the Arnold School, Blackpool and had straight A's at her A level. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and others quit the series.
